Since the introduction of Pilot wings there has not been a consistent design.  The pre 1994 and post 1994 series did not adhere to the actual description in the Dress Regulation.  In 2007 it was decided by the GOC Air Corps and the dress committee to standardise the wings (Silver,  Subdued and Bullion) to be the same shape.

The pilot metal (sliver) wing which is awarded at the wings ceremony is named and dated.  It is quite expensive to purchase and easy to lose when worn on a daily basis.  In July 2009 a metal wing (chromed) was introduced on an optional basis for general wear which then allows the silver wing to be worn on the mess dress uniform.  The replacement is serial numbered and dated 2009.
